Literacy Intervention
All new pupils are assessed shortly after joining the school using the Diagnostic Reading Analysis (DRA). This assessment is carefully chosen to suit the needs of our learners and measures:
- Reading age
- Reading and listening comprehension
- Reading fluency
Pupils whose reading age falls below a functional level are identified for targeted intervention. These sessions are delivered in small groups or on a 1:1 basis and aim to:
- Improve decoding and fluency
- Develop comprehension strategies
- Build confidence and foster a love of reading
- Small Group Literacy Sessions
- Focused reading comprehension and vocabulary building
- Support with extended writing tasks and exam techniques
- Using multi-sensory approaches to engage learners
Our goal is to ensure that all pupils are able to access the curriculum fully, express themselves effectively, and make meaningful progress in their learning.
Maths Intervention
Pupils who are identified as having specific gaps or difficulties in mathematics are offered additional support through our Maths Intervention programme.
We use the Math Recovery assessment to pinpoint misunderstandings and address misconceptions. From this, targeted sessions are planned to:
- Strengthen core number skills
- Build confidence in reasoning and problem-solving
- Fill learning gaps and support functional numeracy
Intervention is personalised to each pupil’s needs, and progress is closely monitored to ensure they are building the skills required for academic success and life beyond the classroom.
